NEW YORK: Eight injured in New York shooting after gunfire broke out near the Coney Island boardwalk during Independence Day celebrations on Saturday night, sending families and visitors fleeing from one of the city’s busiest holiday gatherings.
According to the New York City Police Department, officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots near West 31st Street and Surf Avenue shortly after the fireworks celebrations. Eight people, including four children, suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The victims range in age from six to 37 years. They include children aged six, seven, 12 and 14. The youngest child sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen, while the 14-year-old boy was shot in both legs. Adult victims include two women aged 21 and 25, and two men aged 33 and 37. Police said the 21-year-old woman remains in a critical condition, while the other seven victims are in stable condition.
Investigators recovered a firearm from the scene but have not announced any arrests or released details about possible suspects. Detectives continue to examine evidence and interview witnesses to establish the motive behind the New York shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the police.
The incident occurred close to the Coney Island boardwalk and amphitheatre, where thousands had gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks and entertainment. It remains unclear whether the shooting happened during the display or immediately afterwards.
The violence follows another fatal shooting in the same neighbourhood earlier this week, raising fresh concerns about public safety despite increased police deployment during the holiday period. The investigation into the New York shooting remains ongoing as authorities work to identify those responsible.
