France’s first Ebola patient has recovered and been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment and close medical monitoring following his return from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
PARIS: France’s first Ebola patient has made a full recovery and has been discharged from hospital after receiving specialist medical care, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced on Saturday. The patient, a humanitarian doctor, returned to France on June 23 after working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where a major Ebola outbreak continues to spread.
According to the health ministry, the doctor was immediately placed under strict medical observation after testing positive for the virus. He developed only mild symptoms during treatment and remained under close supervision until two consecutive PCR tests confirmed that he was free of the virus. Officials said he has now safely returned home. Health authorities also traced and monitored people who may have been exposed during his journey, while stressing that the risk of wider transmission in France remains very low.
The recovery marks an important milestone for French health authorities, as it is the first confirmed Ebola case diagnosed on French territory during the current outbreak. Officials praised the country’s rapid response measures, including isolation protocols, specialised treatment and contact tracing, which helped prevent further infections. The first Ebola patient case has also highlighted the importance of continued vigilance when responding to infectious diseases linked to international travel and humanitarian missions.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to battle a severe Ebola outbreak that began in May. Health authorities there have reported more than 1,500 confirmed infections and hundreds of deaths, with emergency teams working to contain the spread through surveillance, treatment and public health measures. French officials said they will continue monitoring the situation closely while maintaining preparedness for any future imported cases. The first Ebola patient has now fully recovered, bringing a positive outcome to an otherwise challenging public health situation.
