The ILT20 Development Tournament returns on September 14 with six franchise-linked squads showcasing emerging UAE cricket talent in Dubai.
DUBAI: The ILT20 Development Tournament will return for its fourth edition on September 14, bringing together six franchise-linked squads and some of the UAE’s most promising cricketers at the ICC Academy in Dubai.
The squads were finalised following the Player Draft on September 2, with each DP World ILT20 franchise assembling a development side ahead of the tournament. The competition runs until September 24 and gives emerging and established UAE players another platform to demonstrate their ability before the DP World ILT20 Season 5 Player Auction on October 1.
Several prominent UAE cricketers will spearhead the six squads. MI Emirates Development have Muhammad Waseem, who has scored 1,241 runs across 46 appearances for the franchise. Abu Dhabi Knight Riders Development will look to Alishan Sharafu, while Desert Vipers Development feature Khuzaima Tanveer alongside Matiullah Khan and Vriitya Aravind.
Dubai Capitals Development have strengthened their bowling options with Haider Ali and Muhammad Jawadullah, both of whom featured for the Capitals in DP World ILT20 Season 4. Akshdeep Nath and Raees Ahmed also provide experience, with Ahmed returning after scoring 227 runs in the previous development tournament.
Gulf Giants Development include Aayan Afzal Khan and last year’s leading wicket-taker Haider Razzaq. Razzaq claimed 16 wickets in seven matches, while Sagar Kalyan and Tanish Suri return after finishing among the competition’s leading run-scorers.
Defending champions Sharjah Warriorz Development bring significant international experience through Junaid Siddique and UAE ODI captain Harpreet Singh Bhatia. Ethan D’Souza and Dhruv Parashar are also part of a squad aiming to retain the title after defeating Desert Vipers Development in last year’s final.
The ILT20 Development Tournament will use a single-league, round-robin format, giving players across all six teams opportunities to compete in a franchise environment. Desert Vipers Development will again feature Sanjay Pahal, who was named Player of the Tournament last year after scoring 157 runs and taking 12 wickets.
For players targeting a future place in the main competition, performances in Dubai could prove particularly important. The timing gives emerging cricketers a chance to attract attention just days before the Season 5 Player Auction.
Impact to expect
The tournament could strengthen the UAE’s domestic cricket pathway by giving locally based players competitive exposure, franchise visibility and an opportunity to push their case for selection at a higher level. With experienced internationals sharing squads with developing talent, the event can also help bridge the gap between domestic cricket and the main DP World ILT20 competition.
The fourth ILT20 Development Tournament concludes with the final at the ICC Academy on September 24. Broadcast and streaming partners are expected to be announced separately.
