DUBAI: Emirates Starlink Wi-Fi has reached a major milestone, recording more than one million customer connections within seven months of its introduction across the airline’s fleet. The achievement reflects the rapid adoption of the next-generation inflight internet service, with passengers consuming more than one petabyte of data while flying.

The service is currently available on 33 Boeing 777 aircraft and three Airbus A380s, with additional installations taking place across the fleet. More than 60 Emirates flights equipped with Starlink now operate every day, allowing travellers to access fast, complimentary internet at cruising altitude.

What makes Emirates Starlink Wi-Fi different?

Unlike traditional inflight internet services, Starlink uses low Earth orbit satellites to deliver significantly faster and more reliable connectivity. Emirates says its Starlink-equipped Airbus A380 aircraft can provide more than 2 gigabits per second (Gbps) of combined bandwidth, enabling passengers across all cabin classes to browse the internet, stream videos, participate in video calls, play online games and stay connected throughout their journey.

Many customers have praised the service, with some describing the onboard internet experience as being “better than at home”, according to the airline.

How has inflight connectivity evolved?

Emirates has been one of the aviation industry’s early adopters of onboard internet. When Wi-Fi was first introduced on its Airbus A380 fleet, aircraft offered less than one megabit per second (Mbps) of total bandwidth, limiting online activities to basic messaging and web browsing.

Today’s Starlink-powered system represents a significant technological leap, supporting bandwidth-intensive applications that were previously difficult to use during flights. The airline continues to provide complimentary internet access for all passengers, making high-speed connectivity available regardless of travel class.

How is Emirates expanding the service?

Following the successful rollout across Boeing 777 aircraft, Emirates has extended Starlink installation to its Airbus A380 fleet. Because the A380 is the world’s largest passenger aircraft, each aircraft is fitted with three Starlink antennas designed to provide strong coverage throughout both passenger decks.

Installation work is now also being carried out at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai to accelerate deployment across more aircraft. The airline says new Starlink-equipped aircraft are entering service every week as the retrofit programme continues.

Future enhancements are expected to include integration of Live TV streaming into the airline’s award-winning ice inflight entertainment system, complementing the more than 6,500 entertainment channels already available.

Why does this matter for passengers?

Reliable internet connectivity has become an increasingly important part of modern air travel, particularly for passengers working remotely, staying in touch with family or accessing entertainment during long-haul journeys. By investing in faster onboard connectivity, Emirates aims to make flying more productive and convenient while supporting growing customer expectations for seamless digital experiences.

The Starlink rollout also forms part of Emirates’ wider fleet modernisation programme. So far, 128 aircraft have undergone complete cabin refurbishments, including the introduction of Premium Economy, upgraded Business and First Class cabins, refreshed Economy seating and enhanced inflight entertainment systems.

With Starlink installations continuing across the fleet, Emirates plans to extend high-speed, complimentary internet access to even more passengers in the months ahead, reinforcing its focus on innovation and customer experience.
