Andrés Iniesta says Gulf United season plans will combine youth, merit and experience as the Dubai club targets a competitive 2026-27 UAE First Division campaign.
DUBAI: Andrés Iniesta has set out an ambitious vision for the Gulf United season, saying the Dubai club intends to compete strongly in every match while creating the right balance between emerging academy talent and experienced first-team players during the 2026-27 UAE First Division campaign.
Speaking to media representatives at Gulf United’s headquarters in Dubai, the 2010 World Cup winner outlined a coaching philosophy built around merit, leadership, experience and daily development. Iniesta made clear that opportunities will be earned through performance rather than age alone as the club prepares for a demanding season.
“Gulf United is a club that believes in youth. Players are not given opportunities just because they are young, but because they possess quality,” Iniesta said.
His approach could be particularly significant for one of the youngest squads competing in the UAE First Division. Gulf United has developed a pathway designed to move promising players from its academy towards senior football while continuing to strengthen the first team.
Regarding expectations for the Gulf United season, Iniesta said: “I always have high expectations, and our goal is to be the best, and this process happens on a day-to-day basis.”
The club’s first home match is scheduled for September 4 at the Jebel Ali Sports Complex, giving supporters an early opportunity to see how Iniesta’s football philosophy translates into competitive action.
Gulf United has also confirmed a new partnership with global technology brand TCL ahead of the campaign, adding a commercial boost as the club enters its latest phase of development.
Club president Ahmed Al-Sarraf said the organisation was delighted to work with a globally recognised football figure such as Iniesta and highlighted the value of bringing his coaching experience and philosophy to players who have developed through the academy.
The club’s rise has been central to that project. Gulf United progressed from the third division to the second before reaching the first division, where it is now seeking to establish itself as a competitive and ambitious side.
Al-Sarraf also highlighted the combination of Iniesta’s technical knowledge and the club’s administrative experience as important to achieving its longer-term objectives.
Impact to expect
Iniesta’s emphasis on merit and academy development could strengthen Gulf United’s identity while giving young UAE-based footballers a clearer route into senior competition. A competitive Gulf United season could also raise the club’s profile and add further interest to the UAE First Division.
