New UAE school rules give students two weeks after school starts to change their study path, while parents are being asked to get more involved.

DUBAI: Parents and students in the UAE have an important choice to make before the new school year starts. The Ministry of Education has introduced seven requirements to help students choose the right academic path, and families will have two weeks after classes begin to change their decision.

The UAE school rules apply to public schools and private schools that follow the Ministry of Education curriculum. The 2026-2027 school year starts on August 31, and students can switch their chosen study path during the first two weeks. After that, they will need to continue with their choice for the rest of the school year.

So, what actually changes for students? Four of the seven requirements are for them. Students need to attend school workshops that explain the different study paths and what each one offers. They will also take part in individual and group guidance sessions, giving them a chance to talk about their interests, strengths and future plans before making a choice.

There is also a strong focus on university. Students are being asked to check how their school subjects connect with the university degree they may want to study later. They should look at the entry requirements for their preferred course early instead of waiting until their final years at school. This could help avoid a situation where a student later discovers that they did not choose the subjects needed for a particular university programme.

Parents also have three responsibilities under the new UAE school rules. They should attend the introductory school workshops, check university entry requirements themselves and stay in touch with the school while their child is deciding which path to take. In simple terms, choosing subjects is no longer something students are expected to figure out on their own.

The biggest thing families need to remember is the two-week deadline. A student who starts a particular path and quickly realises it is not right can still change it during the first two weeks of the academic year. Once that window closes, however, the selected path stays for the rest of the year.

The ministry is encouraging families to start looking at their options before school begins. Talking about a student’s interests, possible university courses and future career plans now could make the final choice much easier when classes start.

News Impact

Parents may need to get involved in their child’s study choices earlier than before. The good news is that students have two weeks after school starts to change their minds, giving families some extra time to make sure they have picked the right path.
