CARACAS: The human toll from Venezuela’s devastating earthquakes continues to grow, with officials confirming that more than 6,000 people have now lost their lives.
The latest official figures put the Venezuela earthquake death toll at 6,125, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez. Sadly, authorities believe that number is likely to increase as search and recovery operations continue.
Thousands of people are still unaccounted for, with unofficial estimates suggesting that between 17,000 and 29,500 people remain missing.

Rescue teams and heavy machinery are continuing to work through the rubble left behind by the powerful earthquakes, but the scale of the destruction is making the task extremely difficult.
According to officials, crews have so far cleared almost 350,000 tonnes of debris. While that sounds like a huge amount, it represents only about 16.5% of the estimated 2.1 million tonnes of wreckage across the affected areas.
The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela on June 24, causing widespread destruction and forcing the government to declare a national emergency.
Entire neighbourhoods were flattened, roads were damaged and essential services were disrupted, leaving thousands of families without homes.

Emergency workers are continuing to search damaged buildings while humanitarian agencies focus on providing shelter, food and medical care to survivors.
