Marugame Udon expansion is gathering pace in the UAE as the global Japanese restaurant chain announces four new locations, bringing freshly handcrafted noodles and authentic Japanese dining to more communities while reflecting the region’s growing appetite for Japanese cuisine.

DUBAI: Marugame Udon expansion is set to accelerate across the UAE after the world’s largest udon restaurant chain confirmed plans to open four new restaurants in BurJuman, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Mall and Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi. The expansion follows a successful first year in the country and highlights the increasing popularity of authentic Japanese dining among residents and visitors.

Operated locally by Opal Food Concepts LLC, a joint venture established in July 2024 between Mayfair Restaurants LLC and West Zone Group, the brand aims to make freshly prepared Japanese comfort food more accessible while maintaining its focus on quality, craftsmanship and value.

Japanese cuisine has a rich culinary heritage that dates back centuries, with udon noodles believed to have become part of everyday Japanese dining during the medieval period. Known for their thick texture and comforting flavour, udon dishes have long been enjoyed across Japan in regional styles, prepared with carefully made broths and seasonal ingredients. Over recent decades, Japanese food has evolved into one of the world’s most recognised cuisines, admired for its balance, freshness and attention to detail.

The Middle East has also witnessed a remarkable rise in demand for Japanese cuisine. Cities such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Riyadh have embraced Japanese restaurants, driven by growing international tourism, diverse expatriate communities and an increasing appreciation for premium Asian dining experiences. Halal-friendly adaptations and locally tailored menus have further strengthened Japanese food’s popularity across the Gulf, making it accessible to a broader audience while preserving its authentic character.

Speaking about the latest expansion, Razeen Parambil, Founder and Director of Opal Food Concepts, said the response from diners during the brand’s first year exceeded expectations.

He said the enthusiasm shown by customers demonstrated a strong appetite for authentic Japanese comfort food prepared with freshness, quality and value. He added that every new restaurant creates another opportunity to introduce more guests to Marugame Udon’s signature dining experience while remaining committed to traditional craftsmanship and genuine hospitality.

One of the brand’s biggest attractions is its signature “Live Noodle Theater”, where skilled chefs handcraft fresh udon noodles inside every restaurant throughout the day. Guests can watch each bowl being prepared from scratch before it is served, reflecting the precision and authenticity that have helped Marugame Udon grow to more than 1,100 restaurants worldwide.

The UAE menu has been carefully adapted for local preferences while remaining true to Japanese culinary traditions. All dishes are Halal certified, with signature udon bowls priced between AED 21 and AED 39. Popular options include the classic Kake Udon and Chicken Katsu Curry Udon, alongside vegetarian and vegan favourites such as Spicy Maze Udon and Veg Clear Udon. Fresh tempura starts from AED 7, while Japanese rice bowls and traditional mochi desserts complete the dining experience.
