The EU has distributed emergency supplies of Hantavirus treatment to France, Spain and the Netherlands while supporting clinical trials and preparedness efforts.
BRUSSELS: The European Union has dispatched the first emergency doses of an experimental antiviral medicine to France, Spain and the Netherlands as authorities step up efforts to respond to the ongoing Hantavirus outbreak. A total of 1,400 tablets of Favipiravir have been made available to EU member states following a donation from Fujifilm Pharmaceuticals in Japan.
The European Commission said the shipment is intended to support patient treatment and clinical trials as health authorities continue monitoring the spread of the virus. While there are currently no officially approved medicines or vaccines for Hantavirus, the European Medicines Agency has identified Favipiravir as the most promising candidate for use under clinical trial and compassionate-use frameworks. The decision on administering the medicine will remain with the individual member states.
The delivery highlights growing international cooperation on health security. The donation was facilitated through close coordination between Japanese authorities and the European Union Delegation to Japan as part of broader EU-Japan collaboration on emergency preparedness and response. The Commission noted that it has maintained regular communication with member states since the outbreak began to ensure rapid access to potential medical countermeasures.
European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib welcomed the initiative, saying cooperation and preparedness are essential during health emergencies. She said the swift mobilisation of the Hantavirus treatment demonstrates the value of trusted international partnerships and coordinated action when responding to emerging threats.
In parallel, the European Commission has launched emergency procurement procedures to secure additional supplies should further infections be confirmed in the coming weeks. Officials say the move is designed to strengthen regional readiness and ensure healthcare systems have access to potential treatments if demand increases. As monitoring continues across Europe, the availability of the experimental Hantavirus treatment is expected to play an important role in ongoing clinical research and outbreak response efforts.
