BEIJING: The Chinese capital saw a vibrant influx of visitors over the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, with 8.21 million tourist visits recorded between 31st May and 2nd June, marking a 5.4 percent increase from the previous year, according to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism.

Tourism revenue reached 10.77 billion yuan (approximately US$1.49 billion), up 6.7 percent year-on-year, as reported by People’s Daily Online. The three-day celebration was further boosted by the overlap with Children’s Day on 1st June, creating a peak season for family-centric activities and educational tourism.

The surge in visitors reflected Beijing’s successful efforts to blend tradition with modern attractions. Events ranged from boat races and folk performances to interactive exhibitions in museums and science centres. The city’s parks, cultural sites, and historical landmarks reported high footfalls, especially from domestic tourists seeking culturally enriching experiences.

Local businesses and hospitality sectors welcomed the growth, which has continued to bolster post-pandemic recovery in China’s tourism industry. With an increasing focus on local cultural experiences and multigenerational travel, the Dragon Boat Festival has proven to be a vital contributor to the capital’s seasonal tourism economy.

As part of long-term strategies, Beijing authorities have been promoting family tourism and heritage festivals as key components of the city’s annual cultural calendar, reinforcing its appeal as a top destination during national holidays.
