Claude identity verification rules will require selected users to submit government IDs and selfies under Anthropic’s updated privacy policy.
SAN FRANCISCO: Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced changes to its privacy policy that will allow the firm to require identity verification from certain users of its Claude AI platform. The updated policy is scheduled to take effect on July 8 and introduces new measures aimed at confirming user identities.
Under the revised framework, selected users may be asked to provide government-issued identification documents along with selfie photographs or videos. The new Claude identity verification process is expected to be used in specific situations where Anthropic determines additional verification is necessary.
The policy update also introduces a new category of personal data collection that includes facial geometry templates. These digital measurements are generated from facial features and may be classified as biometric information under privacy regulations in some US states.
Anthropic said the information could be used to verify a user’s identity and help maintain the security and integrity of its services. The company has not indicated how many users may be affected by the new requirements or under what circumstances verification requests will be issued.
The introduction of biometric-related data collection comes as technology companies face increasing scrutiny over privacy practices and the handling of sensitive personal information. Regulators worldwide have continued to examine how artificial intelligence firms collect, store and process user data.
Industry observers note that identity checks are becoming more common across digital platforms as companies seek to prevent fraud, comply with regulations and improve platform safety. However, the collection of biometric data often raises questions about transparency, data retention and user consent.
As the July 8 implementation date approaches, users are expected to review the updated terms and understand how the Claude identity verification requirements may apply to them. The policy changes mark a significant development in how Anthropic manages user authentication and personal data protection.
