Canada nuclear expansion plans include up to 10 new reactors, faster approvals and long-term support for clean energy growth.
OTTAWA: Canada has unveiled an ambitious strategy aimed at significantly expanding its nuclear power sector as the country seeks to strengthen energy security and support its long-term climate goals. The new Canada nuclear expansion plan outlines the construction of up to 10 large-scale nuclear reactors while simplifying regulatory processes for future projects.
Speaking on the initiative, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said the federal government intends to begin construction of two new reactors by 2035. An additional five reactors are already planned or under development, with further projects expected to move forward by 2040.
The strategy is designed to provide greater certainty for investors and energy companies seeking to participate in Canada’s growing nuclear industry. While no immediate funding commitments have been announced, the government said it will publish a detailed policy framework by April 2027 outlining federal financing tools and support mechanisms available to nuclear developers.
Officials believe the Canada nuclear expansion programme will play a key role in meeting rising electricity demand while helping reduce carbon emissions. Nuclear energy currently generates around 13 per cent of Canada’s electricity and remains an important component of the country’s clean energy mix.
Canada is also a major player in the global nuclear supply chain. As the world’s second-largest producer of uranium, the country is well positioned to support both domestic reactor development and international demand for nuclear fuel. Industry experts have increasingly highlighted nuclear energy as a reliable source of low-carbon electricity capable of complementing renewable energy generation.
The government’s latest announcement reflects growing international interest in nuclear power as nations seek stable energy sources while pursuing emissions reduction targets. If implemented as planned, the Canada nuclear expansion strategy could mark one of the country’s most significant energy infrastructure programmes in decades and further strengthen its position within the global nuclear industry.
