CUPERTINO: Among the latest emoji updates in iOS 18.4, Apple has introduced a change to Syria’s flag emoji, reflecting the country’s evolving political landscape since December.
The new emoji now features three red stars on a white backdrop, with a green stripe at the top, replacing the previous design, which had a red top stripe and two green stars on a white band.
Why did Apple change Syria’s flag emoji?
The update follows the fall of former president Bashar Al Assad in December, which led to widespread adoption of what many consider Syria’s opposition flag.
The flag, first introduced in the 1940s after independence from France, has gained traction among Syrians who are advocating for it to replace the current national banner, which was adopted in 1980 under the rule of Hafez Al Assad, Bashar’s father.
Push for digital recognition
As support for the three-star flag grows, Syrians have taken their demands online, pushing for its inclusion in digital platforms and emoji keyboards. Apple’s decision to update the flag emoji aligns with this movement, sparking discussions on how political shifts impact digital symbols.
