Sharjah Ruler Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi has unveiled AED 750 million worth of road development projects aimed at improving connectivity between Sharjah and Dubai. The plans include a new tunnel beneath Al Taawun Roundabout, the restoration of the iconic monument and the opening of Noor Road later this year to ease traffic and improve access across both emirates.
SHARJAH: How will Sharjah’s new road projects change travel between Sharjah and Dubai?
That is the question many residents have been asking after His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, announced a major package of transport infrastructure projects worth AED 750 million.
The initiative is designed to improve traffic flow, strengthen links between Sharjah and Dubai and create smoother journeys for thousands of motorists who travel daily between the neighbouring emirates.
One of the most significant developments is the construction of a new tunnel beneath Al Taawun Roundabout. The project is expected to ease congestion at one of the busiest gateways connecting Sharjah and Dubai while improving access to surrounding residential and commercial areas.
During a telephone intervention on the “Direct Line” programme, the Sharjah Ruler explained that the well-known Al Taawun Roundabout Monument was temporarily removed to make way for the tunnel works. The monument holds deep sentimental value for many residents and has long been regarded as a familiar landmark within the emirate.
Rather than permanently removing the structure, engineers and designers studied ways to preserve it. Following technical assessments, specialists determined that the monument could be reinstated in its original location once construction is completed. Work is currently progressing on both the tunnel and the redesign process required for the monument’s return.
The wider road development programme also includes Noor Road, a new corridor extending from Al Orooba Street towards Dubai through Al Nahda Bridge. According to the Sharjah Ruler, Noor Road is scheduled to open before the end of the year and is expected to provide motorists with an additional route into Dubai.
Officials believe the combination of Noor Road and the Al Taawun tunnel will significantly reduce pressure on existing roads while distributing traffic more efficiently across the network.
The projects are also expected to improve access to key destinations within Sharjah. Directional signage will be installed to guide motorists directly to Expo Centre Sharjah, allowing uninterrupted access to the venue and its parking facilities. This is expected to support major exhibitions, conferences and business events hosted throughout the year.
Another important benefit is the integration of the new routes with major highways including Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road. These links are expected to strengthen regional connectivity and provide faster travel options for commuters.
His Highness stressed that the investment is intended to benefit residents, visitors and businesses alike. He described Sharjah as an open and welcoming emirate that continues to embrace its neighbours while supporting future growth.
Once completed, the projects are expected to create a new level of accessibility for Sharjah while preserving important landmarks and memories that remain close to the hearts of residents.
