Shekhar Tonight is a refreshing comeback for Shekhar Suman, mixing intelligent satire, funny anecdotes, English quotes, Urdu shayari, music and conversations that work across generations.
DUBAI: There are some performers you don’t realise you have missed until they return. Watching Shekhar Suman on Shekhar Tonight gave me exactly that feeling.
For those who remember Movers & Shakers, Shekhar was once one of Indian television’s most familiar late-night faces. He could take a serious subject, add humour and satire, and somehow make you laugh while still making a point, even if it meant poking fun at the Indian political landscape. Interestingly he had joined the BJP in 2024 but claimed to leave the party within 24 hours.
After a long break and some difficult personal years (he lost his elder son due to a heart ailment), it is genuinely nice to see him back doing what he does best. And with Shekhar Tonight, he is back with a bang, and quite literally, a band.
What I personally love about the show is the way Shekhar weaves satire into funny little anecdotes, then casually sprinkles the conversation with flawless English and a healthy dose of Urdu shayari. It gives the humour a certain class and old-world charm that you don’t find very often anymore. Like in the Episode 3 featuring Ali Fazal, where Shekhar flawlessly renders Urdu sher with flawless pronunciation.
He has also included a confession box where guest were seen to literally confess on things that probably they have not shared with anyone. Watch the episode 6 where Gippy Grewal breaks down while confessing. That was the only somber moment in the series.
One minute he is cracking a simple joke, the next comes a clever observation, a beautiful couplet or a quote that makes you stop and think. It never feels like he is trying too hard to prove how clever he is. It simply feels like Shekhar being Shekhar.
And that is probably why the show works across generations.
You can sit down and watch it with your parents, your children or friends. Younger audiences can enjoy the jokes and guests, while those who grew up watching Shekhar will find plenty of nostalgia in his familiar style.
Directed and created by his son, Adhyayan Suman, it seems to pay homage to a living legend. Adhyayan shares his thoughts in a reel he posted on his account.
Smart humour without the noise
There is intelligence behind the comedy in Shekhar Tonight, but thankfully it doesn’t come wrapped in seriousness. The humour is light, sometimes cheeky and often satirical, without constantly depending on shock value or loud vulgar punchlines.
The band, Band Stand, adds another layer of old-school late-night charm, making the whole experience feel relaxed rather than heavily produced.
His decision to choose YouTube instead of an OTT platform is also interesting. There is no subscription wall and no commitment needed. You simply find an episode, click and watch.
That accessibility works particularly well for Shekhar because his audience isn’t limited to one age group. Older viewers remember him. A middle generation grew up watching him. And YouTube gives younger viewers the chance to discover him for the first time. Perhaps that is what makes this comeback work.
Shekhar Tonight doesn’t try to turn Shekhar Suman into somebody new for today’s audience. It gives him space to be the entertainer he has always been… witty, articulate, funny, thoughtful and occasionally poetic.
And after all these years, that combination still works beautifully. A must watch.
