TOKYO: Tomiko Itooka, a 116-year-old woman from Ashiya, Japan, is about to be named the world’s oldest living person, according to Kyodo News. Itooka, who was born on May 23, 1908, could soon hold the Guinness World Records title.

She is in line for this honor because the previous record holder, Maria Branyas Morera, recently passed away. Morera, who was 117 years old and lived in Olot, Spain, died on Monday. The Gerontology Research Group, which tracks the world’s oldest people, confirmed her death.

Tomiko Itooka’s long life covers more than a century of history, including two world wars and many technological changes. Her upcoming recognition highlights not only her incredible age but also the improvements in health and living conditions that help people live longer.
