Salma Al Marri record reached a new high of 58.96 metres at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, putting the young UAE athlete among the competition’s leading performers.
EUGENE: UAE athlete Salma Haitham Al Marri has made her mark on the world stage by breaking the national women’s hammer throw record in the United States.
Competing at the World Athletics U20 Championships Oregon 2026, Al Marri threw an impressive 58.96 metres during the qualifiers, beating the previous UAE record of 58.12 metres.
The new Salma Al Marri‘s record is another big step forward for the young athlete, whose performances have been improving quickly.
Al Marri finished 13th out of 22 athletes in qualifying, missing a place in the final by just one position. She also finished ahead of competitors representing countries including Poland, Denmark and Spain.

What makes her progress even more impressive is how quickly her throwing distances have improved.
Last year, Al Marri recorded 49.02 metres in Slovenia. She has now pushed her best to 58.96 metres while competing against some of the world’s leading young athletes.
She is still competing at junior level, giving her plenty of time to develop further and aim for bigger international results.
Rashid Naser Al Ali, Member of the Board of Directors of the UAE Athletics Federation and Chairman of the National Teams Committee, said her latest performance showed the significant development in her technical abilities.

There was more encouraging news for the UAE team in Oregon.
Sprinter Suleiman Abdul Rahman qualified for the men’s 400-metre semifinals after finishing third in his qualifying race in 46.68 seconds.
He went even faster in the semifinal, clocking 46.27 seconds and finishing fourth in his heat. Like Al Marri, he narrowly missed reaching the final.
For UAE athletics, these performances offer an encouraging look at a new generation of young talent beginning to compete strongly at international level.
And the Salma Al Marri’s record could be just the beginning.
At junior level and already throwing close to 60 metres on the world stage, the young Emirati athlete has given UAE sports fans a name to remember.
