Dubai’s RTA has opened Phase I of the Hessa Street Development Project, easing traffic and adding cycling routes between Al Khail and Sheikh Zayed Roads

DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened Phase I of the Hessa Street Development Project, making it easier for drivers to move between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road. The newly developed stretch runs 4.5 km, with major upgrades designed to ease congestion and improve daily commutes.

The improvements include widening Hessa Street from two to four lanes in each direction and building bridges at key junctions with Al Asayel Street, First Al Khail Street, and Sheikh Zayed Road. These upgrades are now boosting capacity to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour, twice as much as before. About 90 percent of the project is done, with remaining roadworks, intersection finishes and cycling paths set to wrap up by mid-2026.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, said the project fits into Dubai’s wider plan to improve infrastructure for a growing population. The areas served by the road, including Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle, are expected to have more than 640,000 residents by 2030.

One of the highlights is the 13.5 km cycling and e-scooter track, built along Hessa Street. It connects Al Sufouh with Dubai Hills and links directly to Dubai Internet City Metro Station. The track is 4.5 metres wide and includes a specially designed bridge that crosses both Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, with separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians.

Four major intersections are being upgraded:

  • At Sheikh Zayed Road, a new ramp now helps traffic turn easily onto Hessa Street
  • At First Al Khail Street, the Hessa Street bridge now has four lanes in each direction
  • At Al Asayel Street, the existing bridge was widened to four lanes each way
  • At Al Khail Road, a ramp was completed in 2024 to help traffic heading north toward Sharjah

The full project is expected to ease pressure on the road network, reduce travel times, and encourage greener travel options like cycling and e-scooters.
