Emirates has recycled and reused more than 88,000 kilograms of plastic from inflight dining items, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable aviation and circular economy practices.

DUBAI: Emirates has revealed that it recycled and repurposed more than 88,000 kilograms of plastic from its Economy Class inflight dining service over the past year, marking a major milestone in its ongoing sustainability efforts ahead of World Environment Day on 5 June.

The achievement comes through the airline’s closed-loop recycling programme, launched in June 2023, which transforms damaged and unserviceable meal trays, casseroles, snack dishes and bowls into new onboard products. The initiative represents a significant investment in sustainable operations, with Emirates allocating more than AED 50 million towards developing a circular manufacturing model for inflight serviceware.

The plastic recycling programme begins when used Economy Class dining items are collected after flights and transported to a specialist facility in Dubai. There, the materials are cleaned, inspected and processed into new meal service products containing up to 25 per cent recycled content. The refurbished items are then returned to Emirates Flight Catering and reintroduced across the airline’s extensive global network.

The initiative is delivered in partnership with deSter FZE UAE, a leading aviation serviceware manufacturer specialising in closed-loop production. By recycling materials locally, the programme helps reduce landfill waste while lowering transportation-related emissions.

Beyond the plastic recycling programme, Emirates continues to expand sustainability initiatives across its inflight experience. The airline has introduced children’s toys and bags made with at least 50 per cent recycled content, replaced plastic packaging for First Class bedding with reusable recycled polyester bags, and transitioned headset packaging to 100 per cent recycled low-density polyethylene.

Additional measures include paper straws, recycled polyester blankets, responsibly sourced paper menus, eco-conscious amenity kits and onboard recycling of glass and plastic bottles on selected flights arriving in Dubai.

As global aviation continues to focus on environmental responsibility, Emirates says its plastic recycling programme demonstrates how innovation and circular economy principles can significantly reduce waste while maintaining service standards for millions of passengers worldwide.
