The Al Dhaid waste management complex will serve seven municipalities with advanced recycling, waste treatment and resource recovery facilities, supporting Sharjah’s sustainability goals.

SHARJAH: The Al Dhaid waste management complex will become a major addition to Sharjah’s environmental infrastructure following a landmark agreement between the Department of Municipalities Affairs and BEEAH. The integrated project will provide advanced waste management services for seven municipalities across the emirate’s Central and Eastern regions.

Covering more than 430,000 square metres, the complex will include facilities for material recovery, construction and demolition waste treatment, industrial wastewater processing, animal by-product treatment, engineered sanitary landfill operations, waste-to-energy conversion and the production of refuse-derived fuel. The project aims to reduce landfill dependency while improving recycling rates and resource efficiency in line with international engineering standards.

The agreement was signed at BEEAH Headquarters by senior officials from the Department of Municipalities Affairs and BEEAH. The development forms part of Sharjah’s wider strategy to strengthen environmental sustainability and accelerate the transition towards a circular economy.

The project will be implemented in three phases. The first will establish transfer stations, primary treatment facilities and engineered landfills. The second phase will introduce specialised municipal and industrial waste treatment systems, while the final phase will integrate advanced technologies to optimise recycling, resource recovery and sustainable waste processing.

The complex will serve Al Dhaid, Al Madam, Maliha and Al Batayeh in the Central Region, alongside Kalba, Khor Fakkan and Dibba Al Hisn in the Eastern Region. BEEAH said the initiative builds on Sharjah City’s existing 93 per cent landfill diversion rate and supports the emirate’s ambition to become the Middle East’s first zero-waste-to-landfill city.

The Al Dhaid waste management complex is expected to enhance environmental performance, improve municipal services and create long-term sustainability benefits for communities across Sharjah. By combining advanced engineering with circular economy principles, the Al Dhaid waste management complex represents a significant milestone in the emirate’s environmental development.
