Dubai Scholars alumna Lamya Butt has been selected as the sole student speaker for Stanford University’s Class of 2026 Baccalaureate ceremony. Her journey from a Dubai classroom to one of the world’s leading universities highlights the power of ambition, education and perseverance.

DUBAI: For thousands of graduating students, delivering a commencement speech is a dream. For Lamya Sikandar Butt, that dream became reality when she was selected by Stanford University’s Class of 2026 to deliver the student graduation address at the prestigious university’s Baccalaureate celebration.

The achievement places the Dubai Scholars alumna in rare company. Each year, Stanford chooses only one graduating senior to speak on behalf of the entire graduating class, making the honour one of the university’s most distinguished student recognitions.

The ceremony, held on 13th June, welcomed approximately 4,500 graduates, family members and guests. During the same graduation weekend, Stanford alumnus and Google CEO Sundar Pichai delivered the university’s Commencement keynote address.

So who is Lamya Butt, and why has her story captured attention in both the UAE and beyond?

A first-generation American university student, Butt spent much of her childhood between Dubai and Toronto. She attended Dubai Scholars Private School for 15 years before earning a full scholarship to Stanford University, one of the world’s most academically competitive institutions.

This month, she graduated with honours in Economics and a minor in South Asian Studies. Her academic work reflected a commitment to addressing real-world challenges. For her honours thesis, she examined the financial case for developing climate-resilient schools in Pakistan, combining education equity, development economics and finance into a single research project.

Reflecting on her selection as student speaker, Butt described the moment as both humbling and deeply meaningful. She credited her family, friends, mentors and teachers for helping shape her journey and said the recognition belonged to everyone who supported her along the way.

Her message resonated with many students who see education as a pathway to opportunity. Butt emphasised that beginnings do not determine outcomes, encouraging young people to dream boldly and pursue ambitious goals regardless of where they start.

Following graduation, she will begin her professional career as an investment banking analyst in New York. However, she has also outlined a long-term ambition to contribute to poverty reduction and educational access initiatives across South Asia.

For Dubai Scholars, Lamya Butt’s achievement represents a proud milestone in the school’s nearly five-decade history. School leaders described her journey as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to nurturing talent, curiosity and leadership from an early age.

Aparna Verma, Founder and CEO of Scholars International Group, said watching Butt address her graduating class was an emotional moment. She noted that the former student had grown from a bright young child into a remarkable academic and leader who represented her peers with intelligence, humility and grace.

The story of Lamya Butt is more than a personal success. It serves as a reminder of the opportunities available to students who combine talent with determination and support. From a classroom in Dubai to one of the world’s most prestigious university stages, her journey offers inspiration to the next generation of students across the UAE and beyond.
