Bahrain criticised the UN Security Council after a veto blocked a resolution supporting free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

MANAMA: Bahrain strongly criticised the United Nations Security Council after it failed to adopt a resolution on Strait of Hormuz navigation, warning that the decision undermines global stability and maritime security.

The resolution, sponsored by Bahrain during its rotating presidency of the Council, aimed to support free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amid concerns over a blockade by Iran. Despite receiving 11 votes in favour from the 15-member body, the resolution was vetoed by Russia and China, while two members abstained.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al Zayani said the failure to pass the measure reflects a lack of decisive action in the face of what he described as an unlawful threat. He stated that the Council had not fulfilled its responsibility to respond with clarity and resolve.

The statement, issued on behalf of Bahrain along with the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, emphasised that protecting Strait of Hormuz navigation is essential to maintaining international peace and economic stability. The waterway is a critical route for global energy supplies and trade flows.

Officials warned that the outcome sends a concerning signal to the international community, suggesting that threats to key maritime routes may not trigger a unified global response.

Bahrain further stressed that safeguarding Strait of Hormuz navigation is not only a regional priority but a global necessity, given its strategic importance. The statement highlighted the need for stronger international cooperation to ensure security and stability in vital shipping corridors.

The development comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with growing concerns over the safety of international waterways and their impact on global markets.
