PEKALONGAN, INDONESIA: A devastating landslide in Central Java’s city of Pekalongan has claimed 16 lives and left 10 injured, according to Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency.

Triggered by relentless heavy rains since Monday, the landslide struck on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction in the region. Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari confirmed that rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate three missing individuals.

Authorities have issued warnings to residents as heavy rainfall is expected to persist in the coming days, increasing the risk of further landslides. The agency urged communities in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and prepare for potential evacuations.

Landslides are a common occurrence in Indonesia, a nation prone to natural disasters due to its geographic location and monsoon season. Central Java, known for its mountainous terrain, often experiences significant rainfall, making it particularly susceptible to landslides and flooding.

Local authorities and disaster relief teams are providing medical assistance to the injured and temporary shelters for displaced residents. The region’s infrastructure, including roads and housing, has suffered severe damage, compounding the challenges faced by rescue and recovery operations.

Abdul Muhari stated, “We are deploying all available resources to ensure the safety of residents and assist those affected by this tragedy.” He also emphasised the importance of community preparedness and early warnings to minimise casualties in future disasters.

Indonesia’s government continues to invest in disaster mitigation measures, but frequent extreme weather events underscore the urgent need for improved infrastructure and planning in disaster-prone areas.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability faced by millions living in high-risk regions across the country. As rescue efforts continue, the focus remains on saving lives and supporting the recovery of affected communities.
