China’s electric vehicle charging network has grown to over 20 million facilities, capable of serving more than 40 million new energy vehicles nationwide.

BEIJING: China has established the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network, with over 20 million facilities now in operation across the country, according to the National Energy Administration. This milestone highlights China’s rapid transition toward sustainable mobility and reflects its continued leadership in clean energy infrastructure.

By the end of 2025, China had reached a total of 20.092 million EV charging units, doubling the number of facilities from just 18 months earlier. This growth supports the charging needs of more than 40 million new energy vehicles currently registered in the country.

The National Energy Administration said that the expansion of charging stations in 2025 marked one of the fastest infrastructure rollouts in the country’s transport sector. Public charging stations now offer an average capacity of 46.5 kilowatts, representing a 33 percent increase compared to the previous year, which improves the speed and convenience of vehicle charging nationwide.

More than 71,500 charging piles have also been installed in expressway service areas, covering over 98 percent of national highway locations. Additionally, 19 provincial-level regions have achieved full EV charging coverage across all townships, ensuring accessibility for drivers even in remote or rural areas.

This network development is part of China’s broader push to reduce emissions, transition to electric mobility, and support local manufacturing in the EV sector. The country remains the world’s largest market for electric vehicles, driven by strong government support, a growing consumer base, and widespread investment in battery technology and digital transport systems.

The infrastructure scale-up further positions China as a global benchmark in EV adoption and green mobility, with continued plans for smart grid integration and intelligent vehicle charging coordination underway.
