From January 1, 2026, the UAE will expand its ban on single-use plastic products, adding more everyday items like cups, cutlery and thin bags to the list.
Abu Dhabi: Starting January 1, 2026, the UAE will officially roll out the second phase of its nationwide ban on single-use plastic products. This follows a decision by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) to step up efforts to cut plastic waste and support a cleaner, greener environment.
The ban will now include more single-use items like plastic cups and lids, disposable forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks, straws, stirrers, and takeaway food containers made of Styrofoam. Also, all kinds of single-use bags under 50 microns thick, even paper ones, will no longer be allowed.
Alya Alharmoodi, from MOCCAE, said this move is part of a bigger push to build a more eco-friendly UAE. “This is about more than just banning plastics, it’s about encouraging smart, sustainable choices that help protect our land and sea,” she explained. “We know the public and businesses are ready to make the switch.”
There will still be some exceptions:
• Bags used for medicines, trash, or fresh food like meat and veggies
• Large shopping bags for things like clothes and electronics
• Bags and items made from recycled materials
• Products made just for export (as long as they’re clearly marked)
This new phase builds on the first ban introduced in January 2024, which stopped the import and sale of plastic shopping bags. The UAE hopes these steps will help people and businesses shift to reusable, eco-friendly options.
