UAE back to school begins August 31 as 1.27 million students return, bringing extra traffic patrols, buses and new classroom changes.
DUBAI: Alarm clocks are going back on and school buses are returning to UAE roads as more than 1.27 million students head back to classrooms on Monday, August 31, 2026.
The UAE back to school rush will see students return to more than 1,180 public and private schools. With roads expected to get much busier during morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups, authorities are increasing patrols, buses and safety measures.
In Dubai, Police will deploy 253 patrols and use 28 drones around schools to monitor traffic and help keep students safe.

Public transport is also getting a boost. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority will increase bus frequency on more than 30 routes serving busy education areas including Al Nahda, Muhaisnah, Al Barsha, Al Quoz, Dubai Silicon Oasis and Al Garhoud.
More taxis will also be available around selected school areas as demand increases.
School buses have undergone safety preparations ahead of the first day. Operators have been told to check vehicles and make sure drivers and bus attendants have valid permits. A 30-day inspection campaign will also check school buses and operating standards across Dubai.
Parents driving children to school should prepare for heavier traffic, particularly during the first few days. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah are also increasing traffic patrols around schools, crossings and major junctions.
Some schools are making the first week easier for younger children by introducing shorter days and staggered pick-up times.
There is good news for some working parents too. Federal government employees with school-age children can use flexible working arrangements on the first school day, allowing eligible parents to arrive later or leave earlier.

The UAE back to school season also brings changes inside classrooms.
Kindergarten to Year 2 pupils in public schools will not receive homework under changes announced for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
The new school year runs from August 31, 2026, until July 2, 2027. Winter break begins on December 14, with students returning on January 4, 2027.
More than 24,000 education professionals have also completed training ahead of the new term, including teachers, school leaders and support staff.
