UAE aviation sector strengthens its role in national economy through innovation, sustainability, and international aviation leadership.
ABU DHABI: The UAE aviation sector has firmly established itself as a vital pillar of the national economy, contributing significantly to GDP and positioning the country as a global benchmark in aviation governance, innovation and sustainability. In 2025, the sector played a strategic role in supporting trade, tourism, logistics, and supply chains, accounting for up to 18 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product.
To further enhance operational standards and regulatory oversight, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) launched a unified national platform in January 2025. This interactive system regulates drone operations across the country, ensuring safety, legal compliance, and improved investment opportunities in unmanned aerial vehicle technology.
In a move toward future-ready air transport, the GCAA granted Design Acceptance for the UAE’s first hybrid Heliport at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal. This initiative is part of the wider Abu Dhabi Air Taxi project, aligning with the emirate’s vision of sustainable and integrated urban mobility.
Environmental sustainability continues to be a major focus for the UAE aviation sector. The GCAA submitted the third edition of the UAE’s State Action Plan to Reduce Aviation Emissions to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), reinforcing its commitment to climate action. Developed with stakeholders across the aviation industry, the plan includes 42 operational and technological projects, along with 13 initiatives focusing on sustainable aviation and low-carbon fuels.
On the global stage, the UAE secured a seat on the ICAO Council for the seventh consecutive term. The country also marked leadership milestones with the re-election of Hamad Salem Al Muhairi as Chair of the ICAO Aviation Security Panel and the election of Engineer Maryam AlBalooshi as Chair of the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection — the first from the Middle East to hold this influential post.
Further cementing its international role, the UAE hosted significant events such as the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium and the inaugural Global Sustainable Aviation Market (GSAM) in Abu Dhabi. Notably, the GSAM was formally adopted as an annual event under ICAO’s calendar, signalling global recognition for the UAE’s initiative to promote sustainable aviation.
Passenger numbers also reflected the sector’s robust performance, with airports in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah recording over 108.59 million travellers by September 2025, highlighting the growing global presence of the UAE’s aviation network.
