Dubai’s RTA and Emaar sign agreement to expand Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station, increasing hourly capacity from 7,250 to 12,320 passengers.
DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a strategic agreement with Emaar Properties to expand the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station, in a move that will increase the station’s capacity by 65% and enhance commuter experience in the city’s busiest tourism hub.
The station’s area will grow from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres, with upgrades including expanded concourse and platform zones, new escalators and lifts, enhanced pedestrian bridges, and separated entry and exit gates. The project will also increase the number of fare gates and integrate landscaping and mobility connections with other public transport modes.
Once completed, the upgraded station will handle up to 12,320 passengers per hour and support a daily capacity of 220,000, up from the current 56,000 daily average. These enhancements aim to accommodate growing footfall during peak times such as New Year’s Eve, religious holidays, and major public events.
The agreement was signed during the Dubai World Project Management Forum by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, and His Excellency Mohamed Alabbar, Founder of Emaar and Chairman of Eagle Hills.
Al Tayer emphasised that the expansion reflects Dubai’s commitment to enhancing public-private partnerships and developing world-class transport infrastructure aligned with the city’s rapid growth. “This is a strategic investment at the heart of Dubai’s urban core,” he said, adding that the upgrade ensures smoother passenger movement and improved safety.
Mohamed Alabbar stated that the project aligns with Emaar’s mission to elevate quality of life through accessible, efficient infrastructure. “This partnership supports Dubai’s position as a global city offering seamless mobility and an unmatched visitor experience,” he noted.
