Dubai completes first regional test flight of Joby air taxi with RTA, marking a leap in sustainable urban mobility ahead of full operations by 2026.

Dubai has completed the region’s first successful test flight of the Joby air taxi, signalling a transformative shift in urban mobility. Conducted in collaboration with Joby Aviation and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the test marks a significant milestone as the emirate prepares for the official launch of aerial taxi services by early 2026.

The announcement was made by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council, who shared the news on X. The aerial taxi project is part of the UAE’s wider strategy to integrate advanced technologies and foster eco-friendly, future-ready transportation solutions.

The Joby aircraft, an all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle, is engineered to carry one pilot and four passengers. It combines vertical lift with forward flight, reaching speeds of up to 200 mph, and has the potential to reduce travel time on select routes from one hour to just seven minutes.

“This successful test flight marks a new leap in sustainable urban mobility,” said Sheikh Hamdan. “It not only enhances quality of life but also reinforces our vision to lead globally in innovation and advanced transport systems.”

The test follows a definitive agreement signed between Joby Aviation and the RTA, granting Joby exclusive rights to operate air taxis in Dubai until 2031. Initial operations may begin as early as 2025, making Dubai one of the first cities globally to integrate flying taxis into its transport network.

The Joby air taxi service will connect key hubs such as Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai, and Dubai Marina, revolutionising the way residents and visitors navigate the city.

With zero emissions, reduced noise pollution, and a compact urban footprint, the air taxi aligns with Dubai’s ambitions for sustainability and cutting-edge infrastructure. This initiative not only paves the way for faster, greener commutes, but also highlights Dubai’s role in shaping the future of urban aviation.
