Miss Universe India 2026 Kaziah Liz Mejo says kayaking through glowing bioluminescent bays, tasting bold local flavours and dancing salsa are high on her Puerto Rico wish list ahead of the global pageant.

Miss Universe India Kaziah Liz Mejo is preparing for Puerto Rico with more than just pageant rehearsals on her mind.

The 19-year-old, who was raised in Abu Dhabi and will represent India at Miss Universe 2026, has revealed how she hopes to experience the host island through its food, music, people and natural beauty.

Bioluminescent bays top her list

One of Mejo’s biggest travel wishes is to kayak through one of Puerto Rico’s famous bioluminescent bays, where microscopic organisms make the water glow at night.

She said the experience has long been a dream and joked that she would probably turn it into a “full-blown Bollywood moment.” Puerto Rico is home to several such bays, including Mosquito Bay, Laguna Grande and La Parguera.

Spicy mango and bold flavours

Food is another major part of her plan.

Asked how she would describe Puerto Rico as a flavour, Mejo chose mango with a little spice, calling it bold, tropical and vibrant.

She drew a connection with Indian cuisine, saying both cultures appreciate strong flavours and memorable food experiences.

Salsa matches her personality

Mejo also wants to experience Puerto Rico’s music and dance culture.

She said salsa best matches her personality because of its expression, movement and dramatic energy. While she admits she may not know every step, she says she is ready to join in and enjoy the atmosphere.

Looking beyond the tourist experience

For Mejo, the trip is not only about sightseeing.

She said she wants to understand the stories behind Puerto Rican traditions and meet the people who give the island its cultural identity. She also highlighted the pride Indians and Puerto Ricans share in carrying their culture wherever they go.

Miss Universe 2026 is scheduled to take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in November, where Mejo will represent India on the global stage.

Impact to expect

Mejo’s UAE upbringing, Indian identity and interest in Puerto Rican culture could help make her journey one of the more relatable stories around this year’s Miss Universe competition.
