Chile memes are exploding across TikTok, Instagram and X as users turn the country’s unusually long, narrow geography into increasingly absurd visual jokes.

SANTIAGO: Chile memes have suddenly become one of the internet’s strangest viral trends, with social media users discovering fresh comedy in the South American country’s remarkably long and narrow shape.

The joke is simple: if Chile is extremely thin on a map, everything in Chile must apparently be thin too. Viral posts have transformed cars, houses, bedrooms, people and even football pitches into comically stretched or squeezed versions of themselves.

Why is everyone making memes about Chile?

Chile stretches approximately 4,270 kilometres from north to south, while reaching only about 445 kilometres at its widest point. That distinctive geography has long made the country stand out on maps of South America.

The current trend takes those proportions to ridiculous extremes. Some posts imagine impossibly narrow cars and bedrooms, while others digitally stretch ordinary objects to resemble Chile’s elongated outline.

Many use variations of the idea “POV: you’re in Chile”, turning everyday life into an exaggerated version of the country’s geography.

Where did the Chile meme trend begin?

Chile’s geography has inspired online jokes for years. Know Your Meme traces notable examples to at least 2020, when an image comparing the country with a chilli pepper attracted widespread attention on Reddit.

The latest wave, however, appears to have gained momentum among French-speaking social media users before spreading internationally.

By September 2026, Chile memes were circulating across TikTok, Instagram and X in several languages. Chilean media reported examples appearing in French, English, Russian, Italian and Japanese.

Millions are watching the joke

Some individual videos have already attracted millions of views. One TikTok posted on September 18 imagining narrow cars, houses and a football pitch in Chile surpassed 2.3 million views within five days, according to Know Your Meme. Another similar school-themed video exceeded 2.1 million.

Even brands have joined the joke. Ryanair posted its own extremely thin aircraft meme on September 24, imagining what its planes might look like if the airline flew to Chile.

Why has the joke become so popular?

Part of the appeal is that the joke requires almost no explanation. A glance at Chile’s distinctive map shape provides the punchline.

The Chile memes also follow a familiar internet formula: take one recognisable characteristic, exaggerate it dramatically and apply it to increasingly unexpected situations.

Impact to expect

The viral trend is giving Chile an unexpected burst of global attention, with its geography becoming the raw material for a rapidly expanding collection of international memes.
