World Bank encourages climate-resilient irrigation to transform lives

Washington: Many of the world’s poorest people are farmers who rely on their small, rain-fed family farms for sustenance. However, due to factors like drought and extreme heat, crops that once thrived now struggle for water.

The World Bank emphasizes the importance of climate-resilient irrigation in a recent report titled “Transforming Lives Through Climate-Resilient Irrigation: Game Changers for a Livable Planet.” This approach, they argue, can address several pressing issues including food security, economic growth, job creation, greenhouse gas reduction, and climate resilience.

Climate-resilient irrigation has already made a significant impact in regions like Senegal and Turkey. Farmers there have seen increased yields and prosperity due to better access to water and improved irrigation systems. By adopting such methods, they are better equipped to deal with challenges like erratic rainfall and drought.

Similar success stories are emerging in Turkey and Indonesia, where modernization projects are revolutionizing farming practices and improving farmers’ incomes.
