New York: UN Secretary-General António Guterres says it’s time for everyone—governments, businesses, investors, scientists, and communities—to unite and protect our oceans. Speaking on World Oceans Day, he highlights the critical state of our oceans due to climate change, pollution, and harmful human activities. The theme for World Oceans Day 2024 is “Awaken New Depths,” emphasizing the need for action.

Guterres points out the destructive impacts of ocean acidification, coastal development, overfishing, and pollution on marine life and economies worldwide. However, he also mentions positive steps, like the recent UN agreement on marine biodiversity conservation.

He highlights ongoing efforts to combat plastic pollution and calls for more action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions causing marine pollution. Guterres sees upcoming events like the Summit of the Future and the UN Oceans Conference as opportunities to strengthen commitments to protect marine ecosystems.

He reminds us of the ocean’s immense importance—it provides oxygen, supports diverse life forms, and sustains billions of people. However, the ocean faces severe threats, including warming and decreased oxygen levels, as outlined in a recent report by UNESCO.

This report urges policymakers to prioritize ocean conservation and sustainability, emphasizing the need for greater ocean literacy and research to drive positive change. Guterres concludes by urging everyone to embrace the theme of this year’s World Oceans Day and take meaningful action to safeguard our oceans for future generations.
