AL AIN: The UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), in partnership with the Ministry of Education, has unveiled the ‘100,000 Seedlings Initiative’ to distribute seedlings to public schools nationwide.
This initiative, part of the ‘Plant the Emirates’ National Programme, aims to educate students on agriculture, sustainability, and greening efforts, promoting awareness of environmental balance and climate action.
The launch event took place at Mohammed Bin Khalid School, attended by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment. Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the programme’s success in advancing sustainable agriculture and fostering national food security. She emphasised the importance of schools as platforms to instil agricultural values and environmental awareness in younger generations.
Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education, reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to engaging students in sustainable initiatives, noting agriculture’s role in Emirati heritage and development goals.
The first phase distributed 15,000 palm seedlings, with the full initiative targeting 100,000 seedlings. The Khalifa Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and Jenaan Investment Company supplied the seedlings, while the Environment Friends Society mobilised volunteers to assist with planting.
Beyond distribution, the initiative includes workshops and training for school staff and students on tree planting, care, and maintenance. These sessions will also explore the role of trees in combating climate change and preserving ecosystems.
By transforming schools into green oases, the programme supports the UAE’s vision of integrating society with nature, fostering a culture of greening and sustainability.
