Terra bee relocation message highlights the need for calm response and expert care after a swarm was safely moved from a Dubai school.

DUBAI: Terra bee relocation guidance is being reinforced after a swarm was safely moved from Deira International School earlier this week.

The bees, identified as Apis florea, the Asian honey dwarf bee, gathered near the school’s cafeteria and playground while searching for a new home. Although non-aggressive, the swarm required specialist handling. The school contacted the team at Terra – The Sustainability Pavilion, where trained apiculturists safely relocated the colony within hours.

The incident became a practical biodiversity lesson for students, who were given a piece of honeycomb for classroom study. The response was supported by the school’s participation in Terra’s 100 Hives programme, which promotes pollinator awareness and urban biodiversity across the UAE.

Following the relocation, Terra bee relocation experts are reminding residents not to panic when spotting a swarm. Bees are typically peaceful and often move on within 48 to 72 hours. Where intervention is needed, professional relocation is advised rather than eradication.

Terra’s certified apiculturists, including Dr Meriem Hammal, ensure ethical handling aligned with conservation best practice. The pavilion is also expanding public education through upcoming programmes.

The Bee Scientist Programme – Kids Edition will run on 1 March and 8 March for children aged five to 12, offering hands-on workshops on hive science and pollinator conservation. An early bird Ramadan rate is available.

For adults, Terra bee relocation training continues with a Novice Beekeeping Course from 5 April to 3 May, introducing participants to hive care and urban biodiversity through structured weekly sessions.
