ABU DHABI: In a major environmental push, the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat has successfully completed the first phase of its Regreening Our Mosques initiative. This effort saw 10,000 trees planted across mosque courtyards in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra.

Launched under the broader Plant the UAE movement, the campaign aims to increase green spaces around mosques, enhance biodiversity, and support sustainability. The first phase was made possible through an endowment by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court.

According to Dr Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Chairman of the Authority, the trees include Ghaf and Sidr species, which are well-suited to the UAE’s climate and represent the country’s heritage. A total of 3,684 trees were planted in Abu Dhabi, 3,683 in Al Ain, and 2,633 in Al Dhafra.

Dr Al Darei thanked President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and praised the unwavering support of Sheikh Mansour for making the initiative a success. He described the campaign as a reflection of the UAE’s commitment to both environmental care and Islamic values.

The second phase of the campaign will extend the greening project to mosques throughout the UAE. The Authority also acknowledged the enthusiastic public participation and urged continued community involvement in preserving and beautifying mosques.

Through this initiative, the Authority hopes to maintain mosques as symbols of knowledge, unity, and good deeds, while contributing to a greener future for the nation.
