JAKARTA: His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasized that religions promote peace and described Islam as a unifying force among civilizations. He spoke at an event hosted by Indonesia’s Nahdlatul Ulama Association, the world’s largest Islamic organization, attended by leaders from various religions and thousands of association members, with many more following online.

At the “Dialogue and Harmony between Religions and Civilizations” event, Dr. Al-Tayeb highlighted that religions convey messages of peace to humanity, animals, plants, and nature overall. He underscored Islam’s teachings on fighting only in defense of self, land, and nation, emphasizing Islam’s stance of friendship and humanitarian brotherhood towards non-Muslims, supported by Quranic verses advocating kindness, justice, and fairness.

Dr. Al-Tayeb also acknowledged Islam’s historical contributions to global fellowship and civilization, stressing the importance of closer East-West relations and recognizing Western advancements in science and technology.

In response, religious leaders praised Dr. Al-Tayeb’s efforts in promoting values of truth, goodness, justice, and human brotherhood, and fostering peace, coexistence, and citizenship. Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas hailed the visit as significant, reflecting deep respect and affection among Indonesians for Sheikh Al-Tayeb.

Representatives from Buddhism, Protestantism, Hinduism, and Catholicism expressed gratitude for the visit, recognizing its broader significance in promoting peace and mutual respect within Indonesian society.

The event concluded with the Nahdlatul Ulama Association presenting Sheikh Al-Tayeb with the “Nahdlatul Ulama Shield”, symbolizing Indonesian people’s admiration and happiness for his esteemed visit.
