Iran ends visa-free access for Indian travellers starting November 22. India issues safety warnings on scams and security risks.

NEW DELHI: The Iranian government has announced it will discontinue its visa-free entry facility for Indian nationals from November 22, 2025, requiring all travellers from India to now obtain a valid visa, even for airport transits.

This sudden policy reversal comes amid rising security and administrative concerns. Until now, Indian passport holders could travel to Iran without a visa for short visits, making Iran a convenient gateway for regional transit. That will no longer be the case.

In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued fresh advisories, warning Indian citizens travelling to Iran of potential job frauds, fake recruitment offers, and rising incidents of kidnapping. Travellers are being urged to verify the authenticity of employment agents and avoid dubious job opportunities that promise high salaries or sponsorships in Iran.

The MEA also flagged reports of Indian nationals being lured under false pretences and ending up stranded or exploited in remote Iranian provinces.

The advisory recommends that those seeking employment or travel in Iran ensure their documentation is verified, travel through official channels, and stay in contact with local Indian embassies or consulates for support.

Experts believe this change may impact the flow of informal labour and transit passengers who often use Iran’s airports as mid-points to reach other destinations in West Asia and Europe. Travel agents are also being advised to update their protocols in line with the new visa regulations.

Indian citizens planning to visit Iran for tourism, employment, or transit are now advised to initiate visa applications well in advance of travel, and to remain alert to emerging advisories from both governments.
