The UAE Cyber Security Council has warned against fake applications that steal data, enable fraud, and fuel cyber extortion, revealing that over 200 fake apps were downloaded 40 million times in a single year.

DUBAI: Before you download that app, take a closer look. It might not be what it seems.

The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has issued a sharp warning to residents and businesses about the growing danger of fake applications, as part of its weekly Cyber Pulse awareness campaign. The message is simple: one careless download could hand fraudsters the keys to your personal data, your finances, and your privacy.

The scale of the problem is staggering. More than 200 fake applications were identified in a single year and collectively downloaded over 40 million times through the Google Play Store alone before being detected and removed. Meanwhile, around 73 percent of institutions in 2025 were exposed to some form of cyber fraud involving fake applications or other malicious digital tools.

What makes these apps so dangerous is how convincing they have become. Fraudsters now replicate the interfaces, names, and logos of legitimate applications with alarming precision. More than 85 percent of fake applications impersonate well-known apps, making them difficult to spot even for experienced users. Some go a step further, combining fake apps with deepfake technology to deceive victims through fabricated videos and audio recordings.

The risks do not stop at data theft. Stolen images, financial information, and personal content can be weaponised to blackmail victims. The CSC was firm on one point: never pay. Payment does not guarantee safety and only invites further demands.

So how do you spot a fake app? The council advises checking the developer’s name carefully, scrutinising logos for subtle differences in colour or design, reading reviews for suspicious patterns, and questioning any app that requests unnecessary access to your camera, contacts, or location.

Genuine apps also receive regular updates. If an app has no consistent update history, that is a red flag worth taking seriously.

Stay alert, download smart, and when in doubt, do not tap install.
