DUBAI: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has secured intellectual property rights for its solar-powered electric abra design — marking a big step in Dubai’s clean transport journey.

The certificate was issued by the UAE’s Ministry of Economy, giving RTA full ownership of the abra’s industrial design. This means no one else can copy or use the same design without permission. The move not only protects RTA’s ideas but also opens doors for licensing and franchising the solar abra in the future.

This achievement highlights RTA’s growing focus on innovation and sustainability. The solar-powered abra is part of its efforts to reduce emissions and promote green energy solutions in public transport. With solar power being a clean and renewable source, the abra design contributes to protecting both the environment and public health.

The abra design is the first of its kind under RTA’s Marine Transport Department, which operates traditional wooden boats along Dubai’s waterways. Now, with this eco-friendly update, the abra joins a global trend of transforming heritage transport into modern, sustainable alternatives.

RTA says this step boosts its standing as a leader in sustainable mobility, both locally and internationally. The authority is also encouraging its employees to come up with new ideas, showing its commitment to innovation and excellence in service.

This patent protects a valuable asset while also signalling the city’s push for smarter, greener transport solutions — in line with Dubai’s long-term goals for sustainability.
