US-Syria relations returned to focus as the two countries’ foreign ministers discussed regional security, growing cooperation and Syria’s economic stability.
DAMASCUS: Syria and the United States have held another high-level diplomatic discussion, with their foreign ministers addressing regional security and expanding cooperation as relations between Damascus and Washington continue to evolve.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone on September 15, with both sides confirming discussions covering bilateral cooperation and regional developments.
What Syria and the US discussed
According to the US State Department, Rubio and Al-Shaibani discussed regional security issues and ways of increasing cooperation between their countries.
The State Department said Rubio also stressed the importance of the continued integration of Syria’s minority groups and welcomed the country’s progress in its engagement with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The Syrian account of the conversation placed additional emphasis on bilateral relations, economic issues and Damascus’ role in supporting regional stability.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry said the two sides discussed ways to further develop ties and strengthen cooperation, while agreeing on the importance of continued consultation and coordination on matters of mutual interest.

Sanctions and Syria’s economy in focus
Economic recovery also featured in the conversation.
Al-Shaibani expressed Syria’s appreciation for US steps to remove sanctions imposed on the country, according to the Syrian account.
He stressed the importance of continuing coordination over the technical and implementation measures needed to ensure sanctions relief has a practical effect on Syria’s economic and banking sectors.
The ministers also agreed on the importance of continuing to support Syria’s stability and economic growth.

Washington’s official readout focused more specifically on regional security, minority integration and Syria’s cooperation with the IAEA.
