Dubai Municipality has awarded Dh3 billion in contracts to build 100km of stormwater drainage lines across 11 areas, strengthening flood protection and preparing the city for heavy rainfall
DUBAI: Dubai Municipality has awarded Dh3 billion in contracts for four major stormwater drainage projects. The projects form Phase 3 of the Tasreef Programme, which aims to reduce flooding and protect Dubai from extreme weather.
Announced on October 25, the projects will add around 100 kilometres of drainage lines, with pipe diameters reaching three metres. The network will cover nearly 100 square kilometres of residential, commercial, industrial and tourism areas.
Eleven Key Areas to Benefit
The expansion will serve Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa, Al Manara, Al Quoz, Al Barsha, Al Wasl, Za’abeel, Al Bada’a, Al Satwa and Al Marmoom.
Dubai Municipality will build 42km of drainage lines across Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. Another 14km will connect areas between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. The projects also include 21km along Al Wasl Road and 23km in Al Marmoom.
The new pipelines will connect to Dubai’s main drainage network. They will improve rainwater collection and help prevent waterlogging on major roads and in residential neighbourhoods.
Dh30 Billion Tasreef Programme
The contracts support Dubai’s Dh30 billion Tasreef Programme, which launched in 2024 after unprecedented rainfall caused widespread flooding across the emirate.
The programme aims to increase Dubai’s stormwater drainage capacity by 700%. It also targets a 20% reduction in pumping station construction, operation and maintenance costs.
Dubai expects to complete the wider programme by 2033. The upgraded infrastructure will support the emirate’s drainage needs for the next 100 years.
Impact to Expect
The expanded network will help reduce flooding during heavy rainfall. It will also improve traffic movement and protect homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
The projects will strengthen Dubai’s ability to manage extreme weather while supporting population growth and urban development.
