Dubai Municipality has launched an AI beach safety system using rescue robots and drones to improve response speed and swimmer protection.
DUBAI: Dubai Municipality has introduced an advanced AI beach safety system combining aquatic rescue robots and aerial water-rescue drones across public beaches, marking a regional first in smart coastal protection.
The AI beach safety system integrates next-generation rescue robotics with drone technology to enhance response speed, situational awareness and swimmer protection throughout the year. Officials say the initiative reflects Dubai’s broader strategy of deploying artificial intelligence and advanced technologies to improve public safety and quality of life.
At the centre of the system is an aquatic rescue robot described as the first of its kind in the Middle East. The remote-controlled, self-propelled device can move at speeds up to five times faster than a traditional lifeguard swimming rescue. It can operate within a range of up to one kilometre in line of sight and tow weights of up to 500 kilograms.
The device is designed to operate even in challenging sea conditions, allowing lifeguards to reach swimmers in distress quickly while reducing physical risk during the initial rescue phase.
Supporting the robot is a specialised water rescue drone used by Dubai Public Beaches as an aerial response tool. Often described as a “flying lifebuoy”, the drone can rapidly reach swimmers in difficulty, land on the water surface and provide immediate flotation support.
Equipped with a live-feed camera, the drone also sends real-time visuals to lifeguard teams. This enables faster incident detection, improved risk assessment and more coordinated rescue operations.
According to Dubai Municipality, the AI beach safety system functions within an integrated safety network that includes trained lifeguards, continuous monitoring and centralised control systems.
Officials say the combined air and water rescue technologies will help protect visitors across Dubai’s extensive coastline while supporting global best practices in beach safety management.
