Motorists faced slower journeys after Abu Dhabi speed limits were temporarily reduced to 80kph on major highways due to dense morning fog.
ABU DHABI: Drivers travelling across Abu Dhabi during Wednesday’s morning rush faced slower journeys after police temporarily reduced Abu Dhabi speed limits on several major roads because of dense fog and poor visibility.
The speed limit was lowered to 80kph on the Abu Dhabi to Al Ain Road and the road leading to Sweihan, with motorists urged to follow the variable speed limits displayed on electronic road signs rather than the usual posted limits.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued red and yellow weather alerts covering parts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai until 9am, warning that visibility could drop significantly in some areas. One of the worst-affected routes was the E311 highway connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where thick fog slowed traffic before sunrise.
Rather than closing roads, authorities chose to manage traffic by reducing speeds while allowing vehicles to continue moving safely. Abu Dhabi Police reminded motorists to leave extra space between vehicles, stay alert and adjust their driving to match the changing road conditions.
According to the NCM, Wednesday’s weather remained fair to partly cloudy after the fog lifted, with temperatures reaching between 35°C and 45°C across the emirate. Light to moderate winds were also expected, while humid conditions are likely to return overnight, increasing the chance of more early morning fog.
Fog is common across the UAE during the summer months, particularly when overnight humidity combines with calm winds before sunrise. These conditions can quickly reduce visibility on highways, prompting authorities to activate variable speed limits and issue safety warnings.
Police said drivers should continue monitoring electronic road signs whenever weather conditions change, as Abu Dhabi speed limits may be adjusted at short notice to keep traffic moving safely. Motorists travelling early in the coming days are also advised to check the latest weather updates before setting off.
