MUMBAI: A van transporting silver bars worth around ₹17.66 crore, equivalent to nearly AED77 million, overturned on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, leading to heavy police deployment and traffic disruption on Friday.
According to officials, the vehicle was travelling from Mumbai to Gujarat when it lost control and overturned on a flyover along the highway. The driver suffered minor injuries in the accident and was given medical attention.
Reports said the van was carrying nearly 600 kilograms of silver bars during the journey. The silver consignment was reportedly being transported from Nakoda Bullion Company in Mumbai to Modi Sons Limited in Gujarat’s Vapi GIDC area.
After the accident, parts of the vehicle were badly damaged and the body of the van reportedly broke apart. However, the silver bars remained inside and around the damaged section of the vehicle, creating panic and drawing immediate attention from authorities and people nearby.
Police quickly reached the scene after receiving information that the van was carrying valuable silver worth crores of rupees. A large security presence was deployed around the area to secure the consignment and prevent any theft or disturbance.
Visuals from the highway showed police officers guarding the damaged vehicle while recovery teams worked to clear the road and remove the overturned van. Traffic movement on the highway slowed temporarily as authorities secured the site and monitored the situation closely.
Officials said no loss of the silver consignment was immediately reported after the accident. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
