RIYADH: Legendary composer Hans Zimmer, a two-time Oscar winner, is set to recreate Saudi Arabia’s national anthem. Turki Al Sheikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), also revealed discussions about Zimmer composing an original piece titled Arabia, inspired by Saudi culture and heritage.

Al Sheikh shared the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), praising Zimmer as “one of the greatest musicians of the modern age.” The two discussed several potential collaborations, including a soundtrack for the upcoming Saudi film The Battle of Yarmouk.

Plans are also underway for Zimmer to perform a large-scale concert as part of Riyadh Season, the kingdom’s annual winter festival showcasing music, art, sports, and cultural events from around the world. Al Sheikh noted that Zimmer has a deep admiration for Saudi Arabia and its people and expressed his eagerness to visit the country again with his family.

Zimmer, celebrated for his iconic scores for The Lion King and Dune, has earned 12 Oscar nominations, winning twice. Most recently, he performed alongside the Limitless Orchestra at Dubai Opera, thrilling audiences with his live renditions of cinematic masterpieces.

In an earlier interview with The National, Zimmer spoke passionately about the power of cultural exchange in filmmaking. He highlighted how diverse voices, including those from the Middle East, have shaped modern cinema: “We now have a multitude of voices contributing to film from across the world. It’s a world of dreamers, and I love being part of it.”

This collaboration between Zimmer and Saudi Arabia signals a significant cultural milestone, blending world-class artistry with the kingdom’s growing creative ambitions.
