Dubai: In 2023, DEWA achieved a remarkable milestone by recording the lowest electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML) globally. The CML measures the total minutes during which customers experience a power outage. DEWA set a new record by achieving just 1.06 minutes per customer, surpassing its 2022 record of 1.19 minutes per customer. This accomplishment stands out when compared to leading utility companies in the European Union, which recorded around 15 minutes of outage per customer.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the head of DEWA, attributed this success to the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The focus on developing Dubai’s energy and water infrastructure, coupled with innovative efforts and the utilization of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain, and the Internet of Things, has propelled DEWA’s global achievements.

The Smart Grid, a project with AED 7 billion in total investments, played a pivotal role in achieving this milestone. This intelligent grid incorporates disruptive technologies, enhancing DEWA’s ability to manage facilities and services efficiently. The Smart Grid features automated decision-making capabilities and interoperability across the entire electricity and water network, ensuring a smooth and efficient operation.

One notable program under the Smart Grid umbrella is the Automatic Smart Grid Restoration System, the first of its kind in the MENA region. This system operates 24/7 without human intervention, swiftly identifying faults in the power network, isolating them, and automatically restoring services. This innovative approach enhances grid automation, fault detection, and the retrieval of connections, aligning with DEWA’s commitment to maintaining power supply according to the highest standards of reliability, accountability, and efficiency. The achievement of the lowest CML globally underscores DEWA’s dedication to providing top-tier electricity and water services to Dubai, fostering sustainability, and supporting the city’s position as a global leader.
