ABU DHABI: NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has announced the launch of a groundbreaking PhD programme Astrophysics UAE, marking the first of its kind in the UAE and the broader region. This five-year, fully-based programme will begin in the fall of 2025 and be led by international experts in astrophysics and space systems.

The programme offers two tracks: Astrophysics, which focuses on theoretical aspects, and Space Systems, with a stronger emphasis on engineering. Both tracks aim to prepare students for roles in academia and the rapidly growing space industry, particularly in space exploration and technological advancements.

Dr. Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and UAE astronaut, highlighted the programme’s potential to foster talent and innovation in line with the UAE’s ambitious space strategy. “This programme will help create a vital talent pipeline to advance space science,” Al Neyadi said, underscoring the UAE’s commitment to inspiring future generations of explorers and innovators.

Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, also praised the programme as a significant milestone in advancing space research and education in the UAE, aligning with the country’s vision for fostering knowledge and innovation.

The programme will feature a robust research component, with students engaging in a three-year research project leading to a PhD thesis. Andrea V. Macciò, Director of NYUAD’s Center for Astrophysics and Space Science, called the programme a crucial step in nurturing the next generation of leaders in space exploration.
