Umm Al Qaiwain: The Department of Tourism and Archaeology in Umm Al Qaiwain has been actively conducting archaeological excavations on Siniya Island for the fourth consecutive season. Collaborating with local and international partners, the department aims to delve deeper into the cultural and archaeological history of the island, contributing to the preservation of its identity.

Rania Hussein Kannouma, Acting Director of the Department of Archaeological and Heritage, shared insights from this year’s nine-week excavation season, which took place from January to March. The team unearthed numerous stone houses clustered around narrow alleys, revealing the island’s rich architectural history spanning various time periods.

Dr. Michele Degli Esposti, Head of the Italian Archaeological Mission, highlighted the chronological sequence of the Pearling town based on recent findings. Excavations in the southern area suggest a history dating back to the 4th century AD, indicating an even earlier timeline as research progresses.

Prof. Robert Hoyland from New York University’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World mentioned the discovery of large jars from Mesopotamia bearing Aramaic letters, shedding light on the town’s significance as a trade hub.

Historical evidence suggests that the Pearling town thrived in the 4th and 5th centuries AD, attracting Nestorian monks who established a monastery. Prof. Timothy Power from UAE University noted that residents may have migrated from the island in the 6th or 7th centuries AD, leading to the emergence of Julfar in Ras Al Khaimah as a major city.

The discovery of the Siniya Monastery site underscores the island’s role as a cultural crossroads. The Department of Tourism and Archaeology remains committed to preserving the emirate’s historical heritage and safeguarding archaeological sites and artifacts through diligent efforts and strategic initiatives.
