H.H. Sheikha Jawaher launched the 8th AWST 2026 in Sharjah, uniting 65 teams from 16 Arab nations in a celebration of women’s sport.
SHARJAH: H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi inaugurated the 8th Arab Women Sports Tournament 2026 (AWST) at Al Majaz Amphitheatre on Monday, marking a powerful tribute to Arab unity and women’s empowerment through sport.
The event welcomes 65 women’s sports teams from 16 Arab countries competing across nine sports until February 12. Held under the theme “Our Courts. Her Story.”, the opening ceremony featured official flag-raising, music performances, and a symbolic parade led by female cadets from the Sharjah Police Sciences Academy.
Addressing the audience, Sheikha Jawaher praised the growth of the Arab Women Sports Tournament, calling sports a platform for “uniting hearts” and reinforcing Arab solidarity. She emphasised the role of athletes as cultural ambassadors, urging them to serve as role models of respect and sportsmanship.
Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee, highlighted the AWST’s status as a long-term vision for empowering Arab women through sport. He praised Sheikha Jawaher’s commitment to ensuring that the tournament remains a platform for capacity-building and regional unity.
Vice President of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees, Shaikha Dr Hessa bint Khalid Al Khalifa, conveyed greetings from Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal and applauded Sharjah’s leadership in advancing women’s sport. She reaffirmed that AWST now represents a strategic Arab sporting platform.
The ceremony unveiled the official song “Arab Women,” performed by Hussain Al Jassmi, adding cultural depth to the sporting celebration. With competitions hosted across 10 venues in three Sharjah cities, the tournament showcases nine sports, including debut appearances for taekwondo and rowing.
AWST 2026 is open to the public, offering free entry to all events as Sharjah invites the region to witness this vibrant showcase of female athletic excellence and Arab cooperation.
